Jonas St. Michael was born in Canada and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths, University of London and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal. His image-based practice examines the nature of experience and narrativity and its representation through photography and film. More recently, his work has shifted to making photographs and video whose content is conspicuously constructed with the aim of creating a seeming yet fictional reality.

He has exhibited nationally and internationally including Haus am Lützowplatz (Berlin), OK Harris (New York City) and MOMENTA | Biennal de l'image (Montréal) among others. He has received grants from The Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

In recent years, he has been an artist-in-residence at The British School at Rome (2016) and at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn, New York (2018). In 2023, he participated in an artist residency exchange between Quebec and Mexico | Sistema de apoyos a la creacion y proyectos culturales (SACPC).
